Fifi Kwetey Urges NDC Majority Leaders to Prioritize Party Consultation in Decision-Making

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has called on the party’s Majority leadership in Parliament to prioritize consultation with the broader party leadership when making significant decisions.

Kwetey’s comments come after President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive to withdraw a parliamentary move, which Kwetey believes could have been avoided with better internal coordination.

Speaking on Joy News' PM Express, Kwetey praised the Majority Leader and Chief Whip for their efforts but emphasized that parliamentary leaders must work in sync with the party as a whole. “What I will say is that you heard what the President actually said, that they should withdraw it,” Kwetey said, acknowledging their good work. "But they need to recognize that they are not operating independently. They are part of the party, and major decisions must be made in consultation with the party.”

Kwetey revealed that the party’s leadership was not consulted before the decision was made, which he described as unacceptable. “Clearly, we were not consulted. The point I’m making is, don’t go ahead with decisions that will force the President to step in and say no,” he remarked.

He stressed the importance of unity within the party, urging leaders to collaborate closely. “Work as an organ. Work together. Let the party be consulted on major decisions,” he added.

While he confirmed that the issue had been addressed privately within the party, Kwetey warned that such situations should not be allowed to happen again. “Naturally, it will be resolved, but we don’t need to go through that in the future,” he said.

Kwetey also singled out the Chief Whip, suggesting that sometimes the rush to take action can overlook the importance of consultation. “And that goes especially for the Chief Whip. Sometimes there’s a tendency to hurry things without proper consultation,” he concluded.
