A routine peace mission in the Saawie Community of Jirapa turned violent on Friday, December 5, 2025, when five police officers were attacked and disarmed by a group of local residents.
The mission, led by ASP George Doe, aimed to mediate growing tensions between community members and Fulani herdsmen. However, the situation escalated into a frightening confrontation when about thirty residents ambushed the officers, beating them and stealing their weapons.
According to the Upper West Regional Police Command, the officers were in the community to engage local leaders in discussions aimed at preventing further conflict. Instead, the officers were confronted by the group, who overpowered them and seized three service rifles and a pistol.
One of the injured officers later described the attack, saying, “It felt like the entire community turned on us within seconds” as the group ambushed them the moment they stepped out of their vehicle.
The severity of the incident prompted the Regional Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, to request immediate reinforcements from nearby districts. Responding teams rescued the officers and transported them to St. Joseph Hospital in Jirapa, where they are now recovering.
A subsequent search operation led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle (without its magazine) and one pistol, but two rifles and a magazine remain missing. Nine suspects were arrested during follow-up operations, and several items believed to belong to the attackers were seized, including locally made firearms, motorbikes, and a tricycle.
DCOP Yiribaare has since met with community leaders, giving them twenty-four hours to assist in the recovery of the remaining weapons. He emphasized that the safety of both the residents and the security personnel depends on the swift return of the stolen firearms.
