The CEO of the Chamber for Agricbusiness Ghana, Anthony Morrison, has cautioned that the current glut in the agricultural sector should not be celebrated, as it is severely impacting livelihoods across the country.
In an interview on Joy News’ *PM Express Business Edition* on December 4, Morrison highlighted the urgency of the crisis and called for a national reflection, warning that political excitement surrounding the issue was misplaced.
“There’s nothing to celebrate when people are losing everything,” Morrison stated. “This is not a moment of joy for the country or for industry players. The glut is leaving farmers in distress and entire communities vulnerable.”
Morrison rejected the notion that the glut is the result of successful agricultural planning or strategic policy. He emphasized that the crisis is not the outcome of prudent actions in recent years.
“Let me be clear, this glut issue wasn’t caused by any thoughtful strategy or policy,” he explained. “It was purely a political move, and as a country, we need to learn hard lessons from this.”
He called on policymakers to take immediate action to prevent such disruptions in the future, urging that the country must ensure farmers are not left in such dire circumstances again.
“We must never let this situation happen again. It's essential that we find practical solutions to resolve this issue and protect the livelihoods of our farmers,” Morrison concluded.
His comments reflect growing concern within the agriculture sector, where many farmers are struggling to sell their produce and are facing significant financial losses. The urgency of addressing the crisis has intensified as more livelihoods are at risk.
