The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has received a significant donation of operational equipment from the German Government, valued at GH¢1,774,000. This support is aimed at enhancing border security and ensuring the safety of immigration officers, while reinforcing bilateral efforts to manage irregular migration and combat transnational crime across the West African region.
The donated items include a 16-seater Foton View CS2 bus, laptops, tablets, printers, helmets, and bulletproof vests.
This gesture is part of Germany’s ongoing commitment to supporting the GIS, often through collaborations with the German Federal Police and the German Embassy. Over the past five years (2020-2024), German assistance to the GIS has included vehicles (such as pick-ups, minibuses, and vans) as well as document examination tools designed to tackle document fraud and terrorism.
The Comptroller General of the GIS, Samuel Basintale Amadu, accepted the donation in the presence of several senior GIS officials, including Deputy Comptroller General for Command Post and Operations, Laud O. Affrifah; Deputy Comptroller General for Legal, Research, and Monitoring, Philip Peter Andoh; Deputy Commissioner of Immigration for Public Affairs, Maud Anima Quainoo; and Assistant Commissioner of Immigration, Gordon Saah.
In his remarks, Mr. Basintale Amadu expressed the service’s deep appreciation to the German Government for its sustained support in strengthening Ghana’s border security, particularly at the northern frontier, which is considered a high-risk area. He highlighted the long-standing partnership between the GIS and Germany, noting that the donation would significantly enhance operational effectiveness and improve service delivery.
He assured the German Embassy that the equipment would bolster the GIS’s ability to fulfill its duties and strengthen its operational capabilities.
The German Defence Attaché to Ghana, Holger Grossman, who led a four-member delegation to the GIS Headquarters to present the items, emphasized that Germany takes security matters seriously. He expressed Germany's pride in supporting the GIS’s mission to enhance border security and facilitate safe migration.
Grossman further noted that the donation reflected Germany’s confidence in the GIS and its ongoing efforts to build capacity. “Germany is proud to stand with Ghana in creating secure, well-managed borders, and we look forward to deepening our cooperation in the years ahead,” he concluded.
