A recent intelligence-led operation by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team in the Aboabo Forest area of Tamale turned violent, resulting in one suspect being killed and 27 others arrested.
The operation, which was aimed at dismantling criminal gangs involved in robbery and drug trafficking, quickly escalated when the officers came under gunfire from a group of armed criminals. The sudden attack placed the lives of the police officers at immediate risk.
In line with police protocol for self-defense and engagement, the officers returned fire, successfully neutralizing the threat. During the exchange, one suspect was hit. Despite efforts to assist the injured individual, including transporting him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The body has since been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
The confrontation confirmed earlier intelligence reports indicating that the criminal elements in the area were heavily armed and prepared to resist arrest by force.
Earlier in the day, as part of their operational activities, the Special Operations Team visited the Masjidul Bayan mosque in Tamale, where they met with the mosque leader, Sheikh Basha. The visit, led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil and 50 officers, aimed to strengthen community relations and brief religious leaders on the ongoing efforts to combat crime in the region, including robbery, attacks on mobile money vendors, rape, and illicit drug trafficking.
Sheikh Basha, along with several Imams and community elders, expressed their support for the police and prayed for their success in maintaining peace and security within the community.
Following the mosque visit, the team proceeded to Sanzhirigu, where they arrested five suspects involved in the sale and consumption of illicit drugs. Officers recovered large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, as well as bottles of Koffex syrup.
The operation then moved to Aboabo Forest, a known hideout for criminal gangs. There, the police continued their efforts to tackle both robbery and drug trafficking networks. Throughout the operation, the IGP Special Operations Team demonstrated high levels of professionalism, tactical coordination, and discipline in the face of armed resistance.
The operation reflects ongoing efforts by the police to combat violent crime and dismantle criminal networks in the Tamale Metropolis, reinforcing public confidence in their ability to safeguard communities.
