GRA Shuts Down 4 Chinese Firms Over Tax Compliance Failures

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has taken action to shut down four Chinese companies in the Mallam area of Greater Accra due to their failure to keep and present required sales records as part of an intensified effort to enforce tax compliance.

This move is part of a broader nationwide initiative aimed at ensuring that businesses adhere to their tax obligations.

In a press briefing about the operation, Mr. Joseph Adjeikwei Annan, Assistant Commissioner for Accra Area Enforcement at the GRA, explained that five companies in an industrial zone were inspected, with most being foreign-owned businesses engaged in manufacturing and trade.

The companies affected were WZL Doors Manufacturing Company, Alicanonizing Company Limited, Hai Ning Chen Yu Limited, and Yida Feng Company Limited. These companies were sealed after failing to provide requested sales records, and some were also found to be selectively issuing VAT invoices.

Mr. Annan shared that Mingzhou Ghana Limited, which initially failed to present the necessary documents, managed to avoid closure by submitting the required records when enforcement officers began the sealing process.

He stressed that maintaining proper sales records is a legal requirement under Ghana’s tax laws, and failing to do so is a serious violation.

The companies that were sealed will remain closed until they provide the required documents to the GRA.

Mr. Annan further revealed that the GRA had undertaken an extensive public education campaign ahead of the enforcement, including outreach via radio, print media, and other platforms, to inform businesses about the importance of tax compliance and the consequences of noncompliance.

The Assistant Commissioner warned that the enforcement operation would continue across Accra and beyond until there is an improvement in tax compliance. He urged businesses to regularize their tax affairs without delay.

He also cautioned that tampering with GRA seals would lead to stricter penalties, and enforcement measures could escalate to include arrests and legal action where necessary.

Mr. Annan appealed to the public not to shield tax evaders, underlining that tax compliance is a collective civic responsibility essential for the country’s development.
