Halima Buhari, the daughter of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed a more personal side of her father’s life in a newly released book. The book, authored by former Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed, offers a rare glimpse into the private life of the former president.
During the book launch, Halima spoke candidly about the challenges of leadership, saying, “Behind every soundbite, there was a human being; sometimes tired, sometimes determined, sometimes frustrated, always painfully aware that his decisions impacted millions of lives.”
She reflected on how the public image of President Buhari often didn’t reflect the internal struggles and considerations that influenced his decisions. “I saw the man who would sit quietly, listening more than he spoke. The man who worried about the security of ordinary people. The man who agonised over the gap between what was promised and what was possible,” she added.
Halima emphasized the complexities of governance, particularly in a nation as multifaceted as Nigeria. “Leadership, especially in a country like Nigeria, is never as simple as it seems from the outside. It involves trade-offs, compromises, and, often, imperfect choices,” she noted.
While acknowledging the criticisms of her father’s administration, Halima maintained a balanced perspective. “He heard the voices of those who were disappointed, just as he heard the gratitude of those who felt their lives had improved,” she said.
She also highlighted the importance of Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s book, which provides an insider’s view on the shaping of government communication and the challenges faced in navigating public opinion. “This book contributes to the ongoing discussion about presidential legacies in Nigeria. It provides one valuable perspective on how an administration must be shaped, and sometimes challenged, in the court of public opinion,” Halima explained.
