Halima Buhari, daughter of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, shared a personal and insightful reflection on her father’s leadership during the launch of Alhaji Lai Mohammed’s latest book.
Speaking about the dual nature of her father’s public and private personas, Halima stated, “For the public, he was President Buhari. For us at home, he was simply ‘Baba.’” She emphasized the complexities of leading a nation like Nigeria, where public figures often juggle a range of competing priorities under intense scrutiny.
Halima recounted the private side of her father that was seldom seen by the public. “I saw a side of him that never appeared on television and was rarely captured in print,” she shared. “He listened more than he spoke, worried about the safety of ordinary people, and agonised over the gap between what was promised and what was possible.”
Reflecting on the challenges of leadership, she acknowledged the ongoing debates surrounding her father’s presidency. “Our presence here today is not to rewrite history or to insist on a singular interpretation of his years in office. Nigerians will continue to debate his legacy, as they should in a vibrant democracy,” she said.
Halima also highlighted the significance of Lai Mohammed’s book, which offers an insider’s perspective on her father’s administration. “There will be books that praise, books that criticise, and books that document. This particular book provides one important perspective on how an administration must be shaped and sometimes challenged in the court of public opinion,” she added.
