Harnessing the Wealth of Ghana's Waters – Vice President Opoku-Agyemang Calls for Responsible Investment and Recognition of Fisherfolk

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged for increased respect, protection, and investment in Ghana's fisheries sector, emphasizing that the work of fisherfolk is vital to the nation's survival and economic growth.

During a recent working visit to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between the government and the ministry. She shared that her engagement aimed to deepen the understanding of the ministry's operations and enhance high-level cooperation to ensure a sustainable fisheries sector.

Drawing on her personal background from a fishing community, the Vice President stressed the potential wealth found in Ghana's waters, noting that the challenge lies in extracting these resources responsibly, while improving the livelihoods of those dependent on them.

Opoku-Agyemang pointed out that fisherfolk, fishmongers, and coastal communities possess valuable knowledge about the sea, weather patterns, and fishing practices. She called for this indigenous expertise to be respected and incorporated into national policy-making processes.

She also raised concerns about the country’s struggle to meet local fish demand despite its extensive coastline, urging for research and innovation to bridge the gap between supply and demand.

Moreover, the Vice President emphasized the need to elevate the social status of individuals in the fisheries sector, stressing that their profession should never be a reason for disrespect. She underscored the importance of dignity, protection, and sustained investment in ensuring the sector’s growth and success.

By prioritizing the rights and welfare of those in the fisheries industry, Opoku-Agyemang believes that Ghana can build a more sustainable and prosperous future for its coastal communities and the nation as a whole.
