Ini Edo Apologises to CAN Over Controversial Movie Title, Denies Disrespect to Christianity

Nollywood actress and film producer Ini Edo has issued a public apology to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following controversy surrounding the title of her newly released film, A Very Dirty Christmas.

The apology came after CAN reportedly threatened to have the movie withdrawn, describing its title as offensive to Christianity. Addressing the issue during an emotional Instagram Live session, Ini Edo clarified that neither she nor her production team intended to insult or demean the Christian faith.

According to the actress, the film was produced with dedication and genuine passion, involving months of hard work and extensive promotion. She noted that had any concerns been raised earlier, the team would have reconsidered the title.

Speaking to her followers, Ini Edo said the project was a labour of love and emphasised that she and her team are Christians. She expressed regret that the title caused offence and stressed that there was no malicious intent behind it.

She formally apologised to CAN, stating that she would have changed the film’s title had she known it would spark controversy. The actress reiterated her respect for Christianity and denied any intention to ridicule or disgrace the faith.

Ini Edo also appealed to the association to allow the film to remain available to the public, urging critics to watch it before passing judgment. She added that if viewers felt the film portrayed Christianity negatively after watching it, she would personally withdraw it.

The controversy has since sparked widespread debate on social media. While some Nigerians have criticised CAN’s response, others have defended the association’s stance. The discussion has also reignited broader conversations about religion, creative expression, and freedom within Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Despite divided opinions, the incident has drawn significant public attention to the film and highlighted the ongoing tension between artistic expression and religious sensitivity.
