A National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) task force has conducted a swift and coordinated midnight operation at Asuom in the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals engaged in illegal mining.
The operation, carried out at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, targeted an active galamsey site concealed within a palm plantation along the Nukuru stream. The stream feeds directly into the Birim River, one of the region’s major water sources currently under threat from illegal mining activities.
During the raid, six Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian were apprehended for allegedly mining along the banks of the stream. According to officials, the team uncovered a well-organised operation equipped with excavators, vehicles, and other heavy-duty machinery.
All equipment found on site was seized, and makeshift structures erected to support the illegal activities were dismantled.
The operation forms part of NAIMOS’ intensified efforts to curb the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, particularly in communities reliant on the Birim River for water and agriculture.
Investigations are ongoing.
