UCC Acting Vice-Chancellor Promises Overseas Scholarship for Valedictorian on Condition of Return to Teach

Nasirudeen Ghartey has emerged as one of the most celebrated graduates of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) following his outstanding academic performance at the institution’s 58th Congregation ceremony. The Actuarial Science graduate recorded an exceptional Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.99, earning him the title of Valedictorian and widespread admiration from the public.

During the graduation ceremony held on December 19, the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto, paid glowing tribute to Nasirudeen Ghartey, describing his achievement as remarkable and worthy of special recognition.

“I would like to give a special recognition to our valedictorian, Nasirudeen Ghartey. Let’s give him a resounding applause. A 4.0 CGPA is no joke,” Professor Aheto remarked, drawing loud applause from the audience.

In an unexpected announcement, the Acting Vice-Chancellor revealed plans to spearhead efforts, with the support of university management, to secure an international scholarship for the outstanding graduate to pursue further studies abroad. This announcement was met with excitement and applause from graduands and attendees.

However, Professor Aheto explained that the scholarship would be offered under a specific condition. Nasirudeen Ghartey would be required to return to the University of Cape Coast after completing his studies to contribute to the institution as a lecturer, with the long-term vision of him rising to the rank of professor.

“This was not part of my prepared speech, but I would like to say that we will put together a special proposal to look for scholarship opportunities for you to study outside the country,” he said. “The condition is that you return to Cape Coast to sustain the system of the University of Cape Coast as a lecturer, and eventually as a professor. That is the basis on which this opportunity will be offered.”

The statement triggered laughter among graduands, adding a light-hearted moment to the ceremony.

Nasirudeen Ghartey graduated with a First Class degree in Actuarial Science. While the scholarship offer presents a promising academic pathway, it remains uncertain whether he will accept the condition to return as a lecturer or pursue alternative career opportunities related to his field, such as actuarial practice, data analysis, pension consultancy, insurance underwriting, or financial analysis.

Following the event, social media users praised Nasirudeen Ghartey for his academic excellence, with many congratulating him on what they described as an extraordinary achievement.

At the time of publication, posts related to his success had attracted significant engagement online, reflecting the pride and admiration of many Ghanaians.
