Agya Koo Reflects on His Humble Beginnings as a Shoemaker and Early Days with Santo and Judas

Veteran Ghanaian actor Alex Kofi Adu, popularly known as Agya Koo, has opened up about his remarkable journey to stardom, shedding light on his humble beginnings as a shoemaker and his early association with legendary comedians Bob Santo and Abusuapanin Judas.

In a recent interview, the seasoned Kumawood actor chronicled his life before fame, offering rare insight into the struggles that shaped his career. Agya Koo revealed that before entering the entertainment industry, he worked as a shoemaker in Accra as a means of survival. According to him, the trade exposed him to influential individuals and helped him better understand life in the capital.

Reflecting on those years, Agya Koo recounted a frightening incident during which a client saved him from falling victim to Dr Berkeley, a notorious figure who was widely believed to be involved in ritual killings in Accra in the 1990s. Dr Berkeley was later arrested in Fadama, where authorities reportedly found school uniforms and human skulls in his residence.

Agya Koo’s acting career began in the early 1990s with the popular Key Soap Concert Party, where he adopted his now-famous stage name. Over the years, he has built an impressive portfolio, featuring in more than 200 Ghanaian films and working alongside prominent actors such as Nana Ama McBrown. He is among the few actors who experienced the golden era of Kumawood alongside legends like the late Bob Santo and Abusuapanin Judas.

Speaking about his relationship with Santo and Judas, Agya Koo disclosed that they once lived in the same area in Kasoa. While Santo and Judas lived in rented apartments, he stayed in a wooden structure. Despite the contrast, he remained optimistic. He fondly recalled Judas’ humorous nature, noting that Judas often teased him about living in a shack whenever he returned from the bar.

Agya Koo said his unwavering belief that life would improve kept him going through difficult times. Today, that belief has paid off, as he now owns a mansion in Kumasi—an achievement he considers a testament to perseverance and faith.

His rags-to-riches story has sparked admiration among fans, many of whom have praised his resilience, humility, and lasting contribution to Ghana’s film industry.

Agya Koo’s journey stands as a powerful reminder that determination, patience, and self-belief can transform even the most modest beginnings into lasting success.
