Ahafo Region, Ghana – A devastating road crash on the Hwidiem-Acherensua Highway in the Ahafo Region has left seven people dead and 21 others injured, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).


The fatal incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GT-9931-09 suffered a tyre burst while travelling on the highway. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which somersaulted and collided with an oncoming Kia Picanto registered BA-731-20.


Firefighters from the Hwidiem District Fire Station responded swiftly to the scene, rescuing victims trapped in the wreckage and transporting them to St Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem for medical attention. The Ahafo Regional Commander of the GNFS, ACFO II Samuel Ferdie Tetteh, later visited the injured at the hospital to wish them a speedy recovery.


The GNFS has confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, and authorities have not provided further details on the condition of the injured.


This tragic incident has reignited concerns about road safety across Ghana. According to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), 1,009 individuals lost their lives in road crashes between January and April 2026, with 181 pedestrian deaths recorded during the same period. The crash on the Hwidiem-Acherensua Highway serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vehicle maintenance and roadworthiness, particularly as tyre bursts continue to be a leading cause of fatal accidents on Ghanaian highways.


As the Ahafo Region mourns the loss of seven lives, the incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
