The Advertising Association of Ghana (AAG) has issued a grave warning regarding the growing threat posed by unstable billboards, emphasizing the risk of further collapses that could endanger both lives and property if immediate action is not taken before the rainy season begins.
The association has raised concerns over the alarming number of billboards being erected in hazardous locations, including pedestrian walkways and key intersections, which significantly compromise public safety.
AAG President, Andrews Ackah, voiced his frustration with the continued inaction of relevant authorities despite repeated alerts and efforts to engage with them on this issue. He stressed the urgency for stricter regulations and better enforcement mechanisms to mitigate the risks of further accidents.
“This issue has been raised time and again, but it seems we only respond when tragedy strikes,” Ackah remarked. “With the rainy season approaching, it is inevitable that more billboards will collapse. It's not a question of 'if,' but 'when.' Lives have already been lost, and properties damaged, yet no meaningful steps are being taken.”
Ackah also criticized the authorities for their failure to uphold existing laws, questioning whether this inaction stems from a lack of will or efficiency. “The laws are in place, the regulations are clear, but enforcement remains weak. Authorities must take responsibility to ensure that billboards adhere to safety standards, possess the necessary permits, and undergo regular integrity assessments,” he urged.
The AAG is calling on regulators to act swiftly, urging immediate inspections and more stringent oversight to prevent further preventable disasters. The association's message is clear: prompt action is crucial to safeguarding public safety in the face of the upcoming rainy season.
