ASEM ABA: Ghana to Launch Investigation into the Tragic Death of Nigerian Boxer Segun Olanrewaju

Ghana has announced plans to investigate the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Segun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a professional match in Accra. Olanrewaju was competing against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu during Fight Night 15 of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena on March 29. He collapsed in the third round of the fight.

Despite immediate medical attention, Olanrewaju was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

In response to the incident, Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, confirmed that an investigative committee would be formed to review the circumstances surrounding Olanrewaju's death. Speaking to a local radio station, Sporty FM, Adams assured the public that the investigation would be thorough and transparent.

"It is only through an investigation that we can determine if all necessary fight protocols were followed, including proper ringside safety measures and the presence of paramedics," Adams said. "We will set up a committee to investigate the incident, and I assure the public that no details will be concealed."

The investigation follows claims of negligence made by Remi Aboderin, Secretary-General of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C). Aboderin suggested that the fight may not have adhered to the appropriate boxing regulations.

Olanrewaju, a former West African and national light-heavyweight champion, had a professional record of 24 fights, with 13 wins, eight losses, and three draws. His untimely death has raised significant concerns about safety protocols and regulatory standards in professional boxing.
