University of Ghana Lifts Ban on Social Gatherings as COVID-19 Situation Improves

 

The University of Ghana has lifted its ban on social gatherings at the Legon campus, marking a significant change in its COVID-19 management strategy. The decision, effective immediately, was announced in a notice from the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, signed by Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen.

The update allows student groups—including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Student Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), religious bodies, and departmental associations—to resume week-long celebrations and other social events on campus.

“The Office of Student Affairs, in consultation with University Health Services and University Management, wishes to inform the university community that the restriction on social gatherings due to the recent COVID-19 resurgence has been lifted with immediate effect,” the statement said.

Despite the removal of the ban, the university is urging continued compliance with COVID-19 safety measures. “All COVID-19 protocols should still be observed. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated,” the notice emphasized.

This update follows a temporary suspension of social events that began on June 25, 2025, after a spike in cases. During that period, in-person academic activities continued under strict health guidelines, including mask mandates and social distancing.

The lifting of the restriction also comes shortly before the New Patriotic Party’s 2025 National Annual Delegates Conference, set to be held at the Legon Sports Stadium this Saturday—highlighting the improving public health outlook on campus.

The directive has been shared with key university figures, including the Pro Vice-Chancellor (ASA), Director of Public Affairs, hall authorities, and other officials.

Throughout the pandemic, the University of Ghana has remained proactive in its COVID-19 response, implementing health measures to protect students, staff, and the wider community. The administration continues to encourage vigilance to prevent further outbreaks.
