CID Uncovers Disturbing Details in Murder of GIS Officer Stephen King Amoah

The Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has released chilling revelations about the murder of Stephen King Amoah, an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), whose burned body was discovered on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The primary suspect, Bright Aweh, has been formally charged with murder and remains in police custody as investigations continue.

During a press conference held on Monday, August 4, the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, outlined the sequence of events leading to the crime and the evidence collected so far.

According to the CID, Amoah was last seen on the night of July 3, after leaving his residence at Ashongman Estate. He had reportedly received images of large sums of cash from the suspect, who had promised to repay a debt in person. Amoah never returned home, and when his phone became unreachable, a missing person report was filed on July 4.

Following initial inquiries, Bright Aweh was arrested on July 6. Under interrogation, he confessed to meeting Amoah and giving him GHC 500,000, allegedly to settle part of a debt (GHC 200,000) and hold the remainder. However, inconsistencies in Aweh's statement, coupled with uncertainty about the origin of the funds, raised red flags for investigators.

The case took a grim turn on July 9, when a severely burnt body was found in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate. Family members later confirmed the body belonged to Stephen King Amoah.

Subsequent investigations led to the discovery of critical forensic evidence at Aweh’s residence. Investigators reported:

Blood stains in the living room
Evidence of a rushed cleanup
Recently painted walls and an empty spray paint can

At a secondary crime scene near the suspect’s home, police recovered:

A burnt wool carpet
Blood-stained camouflage clothing
A blood-soaked fufu pestle hidden in a bush approximately 100 meters away

Authorities also impounded the suspect's vehicle, which showed traces of blood. All collected evidence has been forwarded for forensic testing.

To aid in identification, DNA samples from Amoah's mother and son are being used to support profiling efforts.

Initially charged with kidnapping, Bright Aweh has now been formally charged with murder and is on remand following his appearance at the Adabraka District Court. He is scheduled to reappear on August 8, 2025.

COP Yaako emphasized that the investigation is still active and that a special operation is ongoing to identify and apprehend any potential accomplices.
