“If Not for Akosua Serwaa, Daddy Lumba Would Have Died Long Ago” – Late Music Legend’s Friend Reveals

 

Ghanaians continue to mourn the passing of legendary highlife musician Daddy Lumba, who died on July 26, 2025. In a touching and revealing interview with BigScout Media, Dwabeng Fosu, a close friend and confidant of the late artist, shared emotional details about Lumba's long battle with health issues and the vital role his first wife, Akosua Serwaa, played in his life.

According to Fosu, Daddy Lumba’s health troubles began following a serious accident that left him with a spinal injury. At the time, Lumba was at the height of his career and reportedly downplayed the severity of the injury, opting to continue performing instead of prioritizing treatment.

“He didn’t give the injury the attention it needed,” Fosu explained. “He thought he could power through it, but eventually, the consequences caught up with him.”

The highlife legend later underwent a major spinal surgery, in which parts of his spine were replaced with metal. The operation reportedly cost $40,000. Despite the procedure, Lumba's condition continued to deteriorate, and he battled chronic health issues for over 15 years.

“Daddy Lumba was very ill for years,” Fosu revealed. “He couldn't even wear his own shoes. Doctors said he didn’t have long to live. That fear inspired his song Makra Mo.”

Fosu and Lumba shared a deep bond dating back to their school days at Juben Senior High School in the 1980s. He praised Akosua Serwaa, Lumba’s first wife, for her tireless dedication throughout his prolonged illness.

“All the medications and treatments he needed were handled by Akosua Serwaa,” he said. “If not for her care and support, Lumba would have passed away long ago.”

Fosu also noted that their friendship and shared history influenced Lumba’s music, with Fosu being referenced in some of his hit songs, including the fan-favorite Yentie Obiaa.

As tributes continue to pour in for Daddy Lumba, many now recognize not just his musical legacy but also the quiet sacrifices made behind the scenes—especially by the woman who stood by him through his darkest times.
