Bibiani GoldStars head coach Frimpong Manso has dismissed the idea that only big-name signings can deliver success in the CAF Champions League, insisting his team is prepared to compete without superstar additions.
The Ghanaian club is set to make its debut appearance in the CAF Champions League after winning its first-ever Ghana Premier League title last season. Ahead of their historic campaign, GoldStars have bolstered their squad with several new players. However, Manso remains confident that success hinges more on preparation and mindset than on marquee signings.
Speaking to Joy Sports, the former Ghana international emphasized the importance of belief and readiness over high-profile acquisitions.
“The moment you mention Africa, it’s like you need some special players. No, they are the same players,” he said. “What we need is to orient their mindset. And that is what we’ve started to do, because you cannot go and then bring in the Maradonas or the Pelés at this time.”
Manso acknowledged the challenges of continental competition but expressed optimism that with the right approach, GoldStars can make a strong impression.
“What we have, we’ve added some to it, but we still need to talk to them,” he explained. “Every year, a new team comes in—some go far, some exit early. It depends on how well you prepare. That makes a big difference.”
As the team gears up for its CAF Champions League debut, Manso believes their preparation and team cohesion will be decisive.
GoldStars will discover their opponents for the preliminary round on August 12.
