A 26-year-old fashion designer, Mabel Asantewaa, has tragically died after allegedly being stabbed multiple times by her boyfriend at Kalabule Chinese, near the Kasoa Tollbooth in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
According to police sources, the suspect, identified as 28-year-old carpenter Bra Sammy, attacked Mabel in a washroom after she reportedly declined his request for sexual intercourse, stating she was menstruating. A heated argument ensued, culminating in the suspect allegedly stabbing her multiple times.
Following the assault, Bra Sammy is believed to have ingested a toxic substance in an apparent suicide attempt. He was rushed to the Amanfrom Polyclinic, where he is currently receiving treatment under police supervision.
Eyewitnesses expressed shock at the incident, noting that the couple had previously appeared to be in a harmonious relationship.
The Weija Divisional Police Command is leading the ongoing investigation.
This incident follows another recent tragedy in East Legon, where a 21-year-old house help, identified as Abena, was found brutally murdered. Abena had relocated from Nkawkaw to Accra in hopes of earning an income to support her ailing mother. Reports indicate she had been employed for just three months before her body was discovered in her employer’s residence—missing several body parts including her breasts, fingers, toes, and private organs.
The employer, a 49-year-old businessman, is suspected to be involved, with growing public concern that the killing may be linked to ritual practices.
Both cases have stirred public outrage and intensified calls for justice, improved domestic violence response systems, and greater protection for vulnerable individuals, particularly women in intimate and domestic work environments.
