Dr. Bawumia Pays Tribute to Apostle Safo Kantanka: A National Innovator and Spiritual Icon

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed his profound sorrow following the death of Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, the renowned religious leader, innovator, and founder of the Kristo Asafo Mission.

In a heartfelt tribute shared on his social media, Dr. Bawumia described the late Apostle as a “pioneering Ghanaian innovator” and a man whose life had a far-reaching impact beyond religious circles.

“I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, a pioneering Ghanaian innovator; and the founder and leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission,” he stated.

Apostle Safo, often hailed as “Kantanka, the African Star,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, according to a statement from his family and church. He was celebrated for his work as a man of God, philanthropist, agriculturalist, and industrialist whose legacy has significantly shaped Ghana’s development landscape.

Dr. Bawumia praised the Apostle’s ingenuity, particularly in promoting local innovation and fostering a sense of industrial self-reliance among Ghanaians.

“He pioneered indigenous innovations and forcefully inspired an industrial spirit amongst Ghanaians. He was also dedicated to improving the lives of the less privileged through numerous philanthropic efforts,” Dr. Bawumia noted.

Reflecting on their personal interactions, Dr. Bawumia recalled the warmth and wisdom with which Apostle Safo always welcomed him.

“As a religious leader, his open arms received me. Anytime I called on him, I departed his presence with lasting words of encouragement and wisdom,” he shared.

Offering his condolences, the former Vice President extended sympathies to the bereaved family, the Kristo Asafo Mission, and all who are grieving the loss of a national treasure.

“On behalf of my family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, the Kristo Asafo Mission, and all who mourn this irreparable loss. May his legacy continue to endure and inspire future generations to believe in our domestic solutions, serve their communities, and put Ghana first.”

The Safo family, through a statement signed by his daughter and former MP Sarah Adwoa Safo, described the late Apostle as “a true genius, a beacon of hope for many, and a father to the fatherless.” They also announced that funeral arrangements would be communicated in the coming days.
