A senior UK-based anaesthetist, Dr. Suhail Anjum, 44, has been brought before a medical tribunal after abandoning a patient mid-surgery to engage in inappropriate behavior with a nurse at Tameside General Hospital.
According to tribunal proceedings in Manchester, the incident occurred on September 16, 2023, during a scheduled Saturday morning operating session. Dr. Anjum, who was overseeing a series of five operations in Theatre Number Five, reportedly left the theatre during the third procedure—a keyhole gall bladder removal—under the pretense of taking a short break.
He was later discovered by a colleague in a compromising position with a female staff member, referred to as Nurse C, in an adjacent operating room. Witnesses described Nurse C with her trousers down and Dr. Anjum seen adjusting his clothing. Both were caught off guard by another nurse who unexpectedly entered the room.
Dr. Anjum, a married father of three who now practices medicine in Pakistan, expressed deep remorse during the hearing.
“I feel ashamed and guilty. This was a horribly embarrassing incident,” he told the panel. “I don't know why it happened or what I was thinking.”
The General Medical Council's representative, Andrew Molloy, told the tribunal that Dr. Anjum knowingly left a sedated patient unattended in order to seek out the nurse, an act that constitutes a serious breach of professional conduct and patient safety protocols.
The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) is currently reviewing the case and will decide whether Dr. Anjum will face suspension, be struck off the register, or face other disciplinary actions.
