Antoine Semenyo's £65m Release Clause Can Be Activated in January

Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo has a £65m release clause in his contract, which can be activated during the first two weeks of the January transfer window, BBC Sport understands.

The Ghana international, who attracted interest from several top clubs—including Manchester United and Tottenham—during the summer transfer window, signed a new five-year contract with Bournemouth on July 1.

However, sources have confirmed that Semenyo's new deal includes a release clause of £65m, which could be triggered during the opening period of the winter transfer window. This clause was included to give Bournemouth enough time to find a replacement for their star player, should he leave.

The winter transfer window opens on Thursday, 1 January 2026, and closes at 19:00 GMT on Monday, 2 February.

Semenyo has been in outstanding form this season, scoring six goals and providing three assists in 11 Premier League appearances for Andoni Iraola's side. Last season, the 25-year-old reached double figures for the first time in his career, netting 11 goals in the league and 13 in all competitions.

Born in London, Semenyo qualifies for Ghana through his father. His early career saw him rejected by Arsenal, Spurs, and Millwall, before joining the football program at SGS College in Bristol, managed by former Leeds and Forest Green Rovers boss Dave Hockaday.

He joined Bristol City in 2017 but spent time on loan at Bath, Newport, and Sunderland before making his breakthrough with the Robins in the 2020-21 season. In January 2023, Semenyo made a £10m move to Bournemouth, where his performances have continued to improve.

Semenyo’s goals played a key role in Bournemouth's strong finish last season, securing a ninth-place finish. However, the club faced significant departures during the summer, selling defenders Illia Zabarnyi, Milos Kerkez, and Dean Huijsen for nearly £150m. They also failed to make goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move permanent, with the Spaniard joining Arsenal. Despite these challenges, holding onto Semenyo has been crucial for Bournemouth’s success this season.
