Nigeria’s men’s national football team head coach, Eric Chelle, has alleged that a member of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s technical team engaged in “black magic” during the penalty shootout of their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff final.
DR Congo defeated Nigeria on penalties after the match ended 1–1 following regulation and extra time. Congo captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive spot kick, sending the Leopards into the intercontinental playoff stage.
Following the defeat—which ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for next year’s World Cup—team captain William Troost-Ekong described the players as “devastated.”
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chelle claimed he became involved in a physical altercation on the touchline during the shootout because he believed a member of DR Congo’s staff was attempting to gain an unfair advantage.
“During the penalty session, a guy from Congo did some voodoo every time, every time… so this is why I was a little nervous after him,” Chelle said.
Footage circulating online appears to show Chelle confronting DR Congo’s technical team during the incident.
DR Congo players were later seen celebrating their qualification for the next stage of the World Cup playoffs.
