Ibrahim Adjei, a former Assistant Secretary at the Office of former President Akufo-Addo, has urged the government to consider selling Ghana’s presidential jet within the next year and purchasing a new one if required to ensure long-term safety, efficiency, and value.
In an interview, Mr. Adjei stressed that national leaders must make decisions with future generations in mind rather than relying on short-term political considerations.
“Every leader must think generational. You should think about the legacy you could leave. When President Kufuor ordered the jet, he knew he was leaving office. It was not for him but for the nation, yet he purchased it despite the criticism,” he said.
Although the Falcon presidential jet has been declared airworthy after recent repairs, Mr. Adjei cautioned that its long-term reliability and technological adequacy should be thoroughly assessed.
“What President Mahama needs to do is recognise that the jet is currently fit for purpose and airworthy as cleared by the mechanics, but for how long? The government should consider how to position the next generation and invest in facilities that will benefit the country,” he added.
He argued that if evaluations show the aircraft may not serve the nation effectively in the long term, the government should take decisive action to procure a more modern aircraft equipped with updated instruments and technology.
“If we need to sell it within the next year, let us do so and purchase one that will serve the presidency better and provide value for money. Technology keeps advancing, and new planes come with features the Falcon doesn’t have. The president must have access to modern aviation technology,” he explained.
His comments come after Bright Simons, Vice President of IMANI Africa, disclosed that Ghana’s presidential jet had returned from France following an eight-month mechanical repair exercise.
