The Truth About “Mineral Water”: A Call for Stronger Oversight and Public Education


 

The bottled water industry in Ghana has grown significantly in recent years, with shelves and roadside vendors displaying a wide range of products labeled as “Mineral Water,” “Alkaline Water,” and “Purified Water.” Despite the appealing packaging and marketing, concerns are mounting that many products advertised as “mineral water” are, in reality, simply purified or reverse osmosis (RO) water—often without the natural mineral content consumers expect.

Understanding the Difference: Purified Water vs. Mineral Water

Purified water—including RO water—is produced by removing impurities, salts, and dissolved substances through intensive filtration processes. While the outcome is safe drinking water, the treatment also eliminates essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The result is demineralized water, clean but not naturally mineral-rich.

Mineral water, however, is naturally sourced from underground aquifers or springs and contains beneficial minerals and trace elements absorbed from the earth. True mineral water maintains its natural composition and is not subjected to chemical treatment or reverse osmosis. Its unique mineral balance contributes both to its taste and recognized health benefits, as outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international standards.

Misuse of the “Mineral Water” Label

An increasing number of companies in Ghana market purified or RO-treated water as “mineral water,” a practice that is both misleading and deceptive. RO systems remove minerals; reintroducing minerals artificially does not transform the product into natural mineral water.

These misrepresentations erode consumer trust and distort the competitive landscape of the industry. Additionally, some brands aggressively promote “alkaline water,” implying superior health benefits. While maintaining an appropriate pH range in drinking water is important, scientific evidence does not support claims that alkaline water provides significant health advantages for the general public.

The Role of Regulatory Bodies

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) are responsible for regulating bottled water production and ensuring accurate labeling. GSA standards—specifically GS 175-1:2013—clearly differentiate natural mineral water from ordinary packaged drinking water. Any company using the term “mineral water” without meeting these specifications violates national regulations.

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) also has an essential role. Many consumers are unaware of the distinctions among purified, mineral, and alkaline water. Increased public education—through media, schools, and community outreach—would empower consumers to make informed choices and hold producers accountable.

Protecting Consumers and Restoring Industry Integrity

Access to safe drinking water is a fundamental human right. Misleading marketing practices compromise public trust and potentially public health. To address this issue, it is necessary that:

  • GSA and FDA intensify inspections and enforce labeling standards consistently.
  • Companies found misrepresenting products face appropriate sanctions.
  • CPA implements educational campaigns to help consumers interpret water labels accurately.
  • Media organizations continue shedding light on industry practices to promote transparency.
