Ablakwa Plans Visit to Latvia Following Alleged Murder of Ghanaian Student


Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced his intention to travel to Latvia in response to the tragic death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, a Ghanaian student. This follows a meeting with the bereaved family, where the Minister expressed his condolences and provided an update on the ongoing situation.


In a statement shared on social media, Ablakwa highlighted that a fact-finding mission, dispatched from the Ghanaian Embassy in Germany, had already presented a preliminary report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei’s death are still ongoing, according to Latvian authorities.


Ablakwa revealed that he will be visiting Latvia soon to engage directly with his counterpart and local investigators, with plans to be accompanied by members of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family. The Minister also outlined further steps that the government is taking, including:


1. The deployment of a fact-finding mission from the Ghanaian Embassy in Germany, accredited to Latvia.

2. The receipt of a preliminary report from the mission, detailing the findings so far.

3. Confirmation from Latvian authorities that their investigation into the incident remains open.

4. Ablakwa's decision to travel to Latvia for direct talks with Latvian officials and investigators.

5. The inclusion of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family in the delegation that will visit Latvia.

6. The government’s plan to engage independent experts to review all investigative reports, especially the expected final report from Latvian authorities, to ensure justice is served.


Ablakwa emphasized that the government remains committed to seeking justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia and will take all necessary steps to address the situation in the interest of the family and the country.
