The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has launched an urgent investigation into the death of Nana Adjei, a 21-year-old Ghanaian student who reportedly fell from the sixth floor of his apartment building in Riga, Latvia, on June 4, 2025.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Tongu, expressed deep concern over the incident, calling a video report on the case "heart-wrenching." He reassured the public that the Ministry was taking immediate action to address the matter.
"My attention has been drawn to a heart-wrenching video reporting the death of Ghanaian student Nana Adjei in Latvia," Ablakwa stated. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already commenced urgent investigations through the appropriate diplomatic channels. We will continue to provide regular updates. It’s important to emphasize that no one harms a Ghanaian abroad and gets away with it—this will not be tolerated. For God and Country."
Nana Adjei, a first-year Electrical Engineering student at Riga Technical University, had begun his studies at the institution in July 2024. Latvian authorities have described his death as a fall, but his family strongly rejects this explanation and is raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
A spokesperson for the family, Sarah Nimli, revealed that just three days before his death, Adjei had sent a disturbing voice note to his family, claiming he had been poisoned. "There’s no way he would commit suicide," Nimli said. "I wrote letters to the foreign ministry, the school, and contacted the police. But it seemed like the police were not responding and were covering up because the individuals involved were Latvian nationals."
In an effort to uncover the truth, the family sent a representative to Latvia. This representative was later joined by an official from the Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin, which oversees Ghanaian affairs in Latvia, to engage with local authorities.
