Minority Caucus Calls for Immediate Reversal of Utility Tariff Increases

 

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has urged the government to immediately reverse the recent increases in electricity and water tariffs, describing the adjustments as an added strain on households and businesses already grappling with economic hardship.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, December 8, 2025, George Kwame Aboagye, Ranking Member on the Energy Committee, criticized the new rates—approximately a 9% rise in electricity tariffs and over 15% for water—as an unfair burden on citizens whose incomes have not risen proportionately.

He noted that the hikes have generated widespread public frustration, particularly because they erode the gains from the modest increase in the 2026 minimum wage.

Aboagye emphasized that the Minority Caucus would employ every legitimate parliamentary tool to oppose the increases and ensure that the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians are addressed. According to him, the adjustments amount to economic exploitation and fail to reflect the difficult financial climate facing many families and businesses.

“Ghanaians deserve relief, not repeated shocks. They deserve leadership, not exploitation, and as a Minority Caucus, we will continue to hold this government accountable and defend the rights of the people,” he stated.

He stressed that the Minority’s action will go beyond public statements, noting that motions, urgent questions, and calls for special debates are all options they are prepared to pursue in holding the government and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission accountable.

The Caucus also highlighted the real-life consequences of rising utility costs. For households, the combined increases in water and electricity reduce purchasing power, further squeezing budgets already stretched by rising living costs. For small businesses and industries, the higher operating expenses threaten jobs and weaken competitiveness.

The Minority reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a strong voice for Ghanaians affected by what it considers harmful economic decisions and pledged to continue advocating for policies that provide genuine relief to the public.
