A devastating fire at a nightclub in Goa, India, has claimed the lives of at least 25 people, including several tourists, in what is being described as a tragic incident for the popular tourist state.
The fire broke out around midnight on December 5, 2025, at Birch by Romeo Lane, a well-known restaurant, cocktail bar, and club located in Arpora, a district in northern Goa. Officials say that approximately 100 people were inside the venue when the blaze began, during a live music performance featuring bands.
Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, visited the site, describing the event as "very painful" for the state. "I have ordered an inquiry into this incident," he said. "Those found responsible will face the strictest legal action. Any negligence will be dealt with firmly."
Initial reports suggest the fire started on the first floor of the venue and quickly spread throughout the building. According to police, many of the victims were trapped in the basement, where they suffocated due to the lack of an emergency exit. While some guests were able to escape, many of the staff members in the basement were unable to flee in time.
Firefighters worked through the night to contain the flames and rescue survivors. Images from the scene show the building engulfed in flames, with much of the structure reduced to a charred shell. Investigations are ongoing.
Officials confirmed that most of the fatalities were club employees, but "three to four" tourists were also among the dead. The identity of the victims is still being confirmed.
A police official told the *Indian Express* that the fire started at around 11:45 p.m., during a live performance on the first floor. Panic ensued, with guests rushing towards the exits, but the lack of proper emergency exits left some trapped in the basement and others caught in the smoke.
The venue was reported to have all necessary licenses but did not have adequate emergency exits on the ground and deck floors. This has raised serious concerns about safety practices, particularly in venues that attract large crowds.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness over the incident, calling it "deeply saddening."
Goa, a coastal state known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and relaxed atmosphere, attracts millions of tourists annually. In the first half of 2025 alone, about 5.5 million people visited, with over 270,000 international tourists.
Local politician Michael Lobo has called for an immediate fire safety audit of all clubs in the area, stating, "Tourists have always considered Goa a safe destination, and this fire is deeply disturbing. We must ensure such incidents do not happen again."
Fires in India have become tragically common due to poor building practices, overcrowding, and insufficient safety measures. Just this year, similar incidents have taken place in Hyderabad and Kolkata, resulting in numerous deaths.
As investigations continue, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant about safety in crowded venues to prevent future tragedies.
