Atta Akyea Urges NPP Delegates to Reject Kennedy Agyapong's Presidential Bid Over Temperament Concerns

Former Works and Housing Minister, Samuel Atta Akyea, has urged New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to reconsider supporting Kennedy Agyapong for the presidency due to concerns over his temperament. Akyea expressed his worry that, if elected, Agyapong could potentially resort to physical altercations with his ministers during cabinet meetings.

Speaking on Accra-based UTV, Akyea said, “I don’t have any problem with Ken Ohene Agyapong, but becoming a leader takes a lot. I am afraid of his temperament, and I am afraid that he will beat someone at cabinet. He has been seen engaged in public spectacles, which are not expected of a leader.”

Akyea further argued that the qualities required for a president include emotional resilience, or “shock absorbers,” which he believes Agyapong lacks. He criticized Agyapong for his public statements and actions, saying, “The temperament of a president is someone who can withstand pressure, not someone who will openly say they will fight someone with whom they have a problem. Caustic language and insulting behavior are not characteristics of someone who wants to lead the country.”

While acknowledging Agyapong’s success as a businessman, Akyea suggested that his leadership qualities in terms of temperament, vision, and intellect were not on par with Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. “What we can do for him as a businessman is to help him build big businesses, but when it comes to combining temperament, vision, intellect, and intellectual prowess, Bawumia is ahead of him,” Akyea stated.

He also revealed that those close to Agyapong are often intimidated by his aggressive demeanor, adding, “People who follow him are afraid of him, and so his temperament cannot be controlled.”
