Bantama NPP Chairman Expresses Concern Over Rising Prices, Questions Economic Direction

 

The Bantama Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Fiifi Mensah, has raised concerns about the sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities, particularly bottled water, warning that it reflects troubling economic conditions under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration. However, he also believes it may be premature to make a final judgment on the government's overall economic performance.

In an interview, Mr. Mensah expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation, noting that despite repeated assurances that the cedi is strengthening against the dollar, market prices continue to remain high.

“I’m not seeing things improve. We keep hearing that the dollar is coming down, but it’s not showing in the prices of items at the market,” he said. “Basic commodities are still expensive. Water prices have gone up, and since everyone needs water, we’re all feeling the impact.”

While government officials have praised Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson for his efforts, Mr. Mensah pointed out that ordinary citizens have yet to see any tangible relief.

“They say the Finance Minister is doing his best, but we should be seeing those efforts reflected in the prices of basic amenities,” he remarked. “Instead, prices are rising.”

Despite the challenges, Mr. Mensah urged Ghanaians to remain cautiously patient, suggesting that the situation might improve in the coming months.

“Maybe it’s because this is the government’s first year,” he said. “Things are difficult now, but hopefully, next year will be better.”

He concluded by emphasizing that the rising cost of living is not just his personal concern but a widespread issue affecting many citizens.

“I’m not the only one complaining. A lot of people, just like me, are raising similar concerns,” he stressed.
