Chelle Shrugs Off Defensive Absences Ahead of AFCON 2025

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has downplayed concerns over Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), insisting that the absence of three key defenders will not derail the team’s ambitions in Morocco.

Nigeria will begin their AFCON 2025 campaign without Benjamin Fredrick, Ola Aina, and former captain William Troost-Ekong—players who were central to the team’s recent defensive structure. Despite their absence, Chelle remains confident in the depth and quality of his squad.

Chelle confident despite setbacks

Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s Group C opener against Tanzania, the Malian tactician expressed calm and belief in his players.

“I am not worried. I trust my guys. Of course, I would have loved to have all of the players available. We will work a lot on defence, but defending is not only the responsibility of defenders—it is about the whole team,” Chelle said during his pre-match press conference.

Key absences reshape the back line

Fredrick had established himself as one of Chelle’s most dependable defenders before suffering an injury in November that ruled him out of the tournament. Ola Aina, who played a crucial role in Nigeria’s run to the AFCON final last year, also misses out as he continues his recovery from a long-term injury.

The most notable absence is William Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football just weeks before the competition. The former Super Eagles captain departs as the reigning AFCON Most Valuable Player, becoming the first Nigerian defender to win the prestigious award.

New faces step up

In response to these absences, Chelle has recalled Chidozie Awaziem, handed Blackburn Rovers defender Ryan Alebiosu his first senior call-up, and included Slavia Prague centre-back Igoh Ogbu, who is set to make his AFCON debut.

The coach believes the blend of fresh talent and existing squad familiarity will compensate for the lack of tournament experience among some of the defenders.

Focus on a strong start

Beyond selection concerns, Chelle emphasized the importance of starting the tournament on a positive note against Tanzania.

“We are happy to be here. This is a big game because the first match of AFCON is always very important. We want to win and set the tone,” he said.

Future discussions on hold

Chelle also made it clear that talks about his long-term future with the Nigeria Football Federation are not a priority during the competition.

“My focus is only on this tournament and my players. There will be time to discuss everything else later,” he added.

Nigeria face Tanzania on Tuesday as they open their AFCON 2025 campaign, aiming to show that squad depth and collective strength—not just established names—can drive a serious push for a fourth continental title.
