Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of Education Watch, has called for an evidence-led review of this year’s examination outcomes, emphasizing that any definitive conclusions about the causes of performance trends must be based on the chief examiner’s report. He stressed that the full report, which is expected by the end of the month, is critical for making "scientific statements" about the results.
Speaking on *Metro TV* in an interview monitored by *MyNewsGh*, Asare pointed out that while public debates and discussions are inevitable, the country must focus on evidence-based analysis. “We need to first look at the chief examiner’s report to understand what challenges candidates faced in answering the questions,” he said. “WAEC has released some pointers, but these are just headline observations,” he added.
Asare further explained that without the detailed chief examiner’s report, any assessments of the exam outcomes would remain incomplete. “We definitely need the full report to understand the situation better, especially by reviewing the exam paper itself,” he emphasized.
In addition, he confirmed that *Africa Education Watch* is conducting its own survey of teachers to support a data-driven review. “We launched an online survey on Sunday, aiming to gather insights from about a thousand teachers. While early trends are emerging, they cannot replace the official report,” he noted.
Asare also addressed the tendency to politicize education quality discussions, urging that policymakers and duty-bearers should avoid distractions and focus on addressing the real issues. “There is some politicization of the issues, but what matters is that the authorities focus on the actual problems and take meaningful action to implement effective remedies,” he stated.
He emphasized that any reforms should be based on solid evidence, not speculation. “It is important that we identify the gaps accurately and support the education system to address them,” he concluded.
