Eric Agbana Urges NDC to Rally Behind Sammy Gyamfi Amid Goldbod Controversy

Eric Edem Agbana has called on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to firmly support Sammy Gyamfi, describing him as one of the party’s most valuable assets.

In a Facebook post cited by MyNewsGh, Agbana praised Gyamfi’s contributions to the party and warned against what he described as persistent attacks from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). According to him, these attacks are driven by the impact of Gyamfi’s work and are often based on misinformation.

“We must protect him. The NPP understands the impact of his work, which is why they attack him daily with fabricated lies. Our responsibility is to stand by him. He is a precious jewel,” Agbana stated.

His comments come against the backdrop of growing concerns raised by the Minority caucus in Parliament regarding alleged financial losses linked to Goldbod, an institution headed by Sammy Gyamfi. The Minority has suggested that potential losses could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, December 29, Minority spokesperson Kojo Oppong Nkrumah cautioned that certain arrangements within Goldbod could be facilitating the purchase of illegally mined gold. He further warned of possible environmental and financial implications arising from such practices.

“There are serious environmental issues that must be addressed,” Oppong Nkrumah said, adding that the Minority has reason to believe that state funds may be used to acquire gold produced through illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as galamsey.

The Minority caucus is therefore calling for immediate regulatory interventions, including the suspension of mining permits in forest reserves and the implementation of stricter traceability measures within the gold trading framework.

Oppong Nkrumah emphasized that gaps in transparency have created opportunities for abuse, posing risks to public finances and the environment. He stressed the need for urgent action to safeguard state resources and prevent further ecological damage.
