The Upper West Regional Police Command has confirmed the deaths of two individuals and the arrest of two suspects following a violent confrontation among family members over a disputed parcel of land in the region.
The Upper West Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Francis Yiribaare, described the incident as deeply unfortunate, noting that the situation escalated rapidly before police could restore calm.
According to DCOP Yiribaare, the police received reports late in the day about a disturbance involving members of the same family over ownership of land. A Quick Response Team (QRT) was immediately dispatched to the scene; however, by the time officers arrived, the violence had already resulted in fatal consequences.
“Upon our arrival, we discovered that the situation had escalated beyond control, leading to the death of one individual at the scene,” he said.
He further disclosed that another victim, who was found unconscious, was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment but later died, bringing the death toll to two.
“One of the victims we encountered was unconscious and was immediately taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, he also passed away,” the Regional Commander confirmed.
DCOP Yiribaare stated that the police have launched a full-scale investigation into the incident, with significant cooperation from residents in the area. He explained that the crime scene has been thoroughly processed and all relevant evidence secured.
“So far, the public has been very cooperative. Our team has carefully processed the scene and gathered all necessary material evidence,” he noted.
As part of the investigations, two suspects have been arrested. One of them is currently receiving medical treatment under police guard, while the other was arrested in the early hours of the morning and remains in police custody.
“At this point, one suspect is on admission under police guard, while another suspect was arrested at dawn today and is currently in detention,” DCOP Yiribaare said.
He assured the public that the police are determined to ensure justice is served, stressing that no effort will be spared in uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in getting to the bottom of this matter and ensuring that justice takes its course,” he emphasized.
The Regional Police Commander also appealed to the affected family and the general public to resolve land and other disputes through lawful and peaceful means, warning that violence only undermines peace, security, and development.
“I encourage the family to channel all issues related to this land through the police or local authorities for a peaceful resolution. Violence does not help anyone,” he advised.
He underscored the importance of peaceful dispute resolution in maintaining stability in the Upper West Region, noting that it is essential for social cohesion and development.
On the temporary closure of the affected road for security and investigative purposes, DCOP Yiribaare indicated that access would be restored once all necessary procedures are completed.
“We are finalizing a few outstanding processes, and once they are completed, the road will be reopened,” he assured.
