Government Launches Net-Metering App to Boost Solar Energy Adoption in Ghana

The Government of Ghana has launched a new digital application aimed at accelerating the country’s shift toward renewable energy by simplifying the process for households, businesses, and institutions to join the national net-metering program.

Net metering allows consumers who generate electricity via solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to feed excess power back into the national grid, receiving credits in exchange, which in turn lowers their energy costs.

At the app launch event in Accra on Thursday, December 1, 2025, Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Richard Gyan-Mensah, explained that the new online platform is designed to streamline applications for net metering and significantly boost solar energy uptake.

“This user-friendly portal will enable homes, businesses, and industries to apply for smart meters for both captive and renewable energy systems. It will also help us track solar installations nationwide,” he said.

Gyan-Mensah noted that the initiative is part of broader efforts to diversify Ghana’s energy mix and is supported by key partners, including the Government of Ghana, the African Development Bank, the Climate Investment Funds, and the Swiss Government.

Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, emphasized that the digital platform will improve the efficiency of document submission, system monitoring, reporting, and data management, thereby enhancing transparency and accountability across the renewable energy value chain.

Eunice Biritwum, Acting Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, added that the application would eliminate administrative delays and improve coordination among various stakeholders, including the Energy Commission and the Ministry of Energy.

The African Development Bank’s Country Manager, Eyerusalem Fasika, highlighted the institution’s investment of US$27 million in Ghana’s renewable energy initiatives. This funding supports ongoing mini-grid PV and net-metering projects under the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.

The launch of this new platform is expected to accelerate the adoption of solar energy in Ghana, providing consumers with an efficient and cost-effective pathway to clean, affordable energy.
