The Accra High Court has dismissed an application filed by lawyers representing the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
His legal team had asked the court to compel state prosecutors to provide additional documents they considered essential for preparing his defence.
The application followed an earlier sitting on 25 November 2025, where lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi informed the court of their intention to request further disclosures. When the case resumed on Monday, 8 December, both the defence and prosecution presented their arguments.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai urged the court to dismiss the application, maintaining that prosecutors had already fulfilled all disclosure obligations required by law.
After hearing the submissions, presiding judge Audrey Kocuvie-Tay ruled that the application lacked merit and subsequently struck it out.
Speaking to the media after the ruling, Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated that the defence was not troubled by the decision.
“This ruling only confirms our belief that the prosecution does not possess the documents we requested, and we are completely comfortable with the court’s decision,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi is currently facing a six-count criminal charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General in October. The charges relate to alleged unlawful mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region and are grounded in provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act.
He is standing trial alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited, a mining firm linked to him.
