Political analyst Nana Kofi Frimpong Ziega has advised Kennedy Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential primaries, to select Samira Bawumia as his running mate if he secures the nomination. Ziega described such a move as a strategic way to foster party unity and strengthen internal cohesion.
Speaking on Kessben TV, Ziega expressed concern over the NPP’s current internal struggles, warning that these could severely impact the party's chances in the 2028 general elections.
“The NPP is facing a lot of challenges right now. If they win in 2028, it will be nothing short of a miracle,” he stated.
Ziega highlighted the growing tension within the party, noting that the nature of the ongoing internal campaigns could lead to long-term divisions that would harm the party’s unity. He drew comparisons to past internal struggles, saying, "The current atmosphere is even more dangerous than what we saw in 1998 when the party faced similar divisions."
He also expressed concerns about the aftermath of the primaries, questioning whether party figures would be willing to support the eventual winner. “For example, if Kennedy Agyapong wins, how can we be sure that someone like Abronye will campaign for him?” he asked.
To address these challenges, Ziega proposed that Agyapong consider selecting Samira Bawumia as his running mate if he wins the primaries. He argued that Bawumia, being a skilled politician, would help unify the party and broaden its appeal, particularly among women and the Muslim community.
“If Kennedy Agyapong truly cares about the party, he should choose Samira Bawumia as his running mate,” Ziega urged. “This would help heal the internal divisions and also attract a wider voter base.”
Ziega also outlined a similar recommendation for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, should he win the primaries. He suggested that Bawumia should focus on healing party divisions by bringing together the various campaign teams from all aspirants.
“Bawumia should make a conscious effort to include everyone in his campaign, including key members of Kennedy’s team, to help ease the tensions and ensure the party’s success,” Ziega concluded.
According to Ziega, these steps toward inclusion and reconciliation would be crucial for the NPP’s long-term survival and success.
