Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The lawmaker announced his defection on Wednesday, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his political future. His decision follows prolonged internal disagreements within APGA, which he described as irreconcilable despite repeated efforts to resolve them through internal party mechanisms.
According to Abaribe, he could no longer continue in the party due to fundamental differences with its leadership and overall direction. He stated that the ADC offers a clearer ideological platform that aligns with his principles, values, and long-standing commitment to democratic accountability and good governance.
Speaking on his decision, the senator explained that the move was the result of extensive consultations with political associates, stakeholders, and constituents across his senatorial district.
“After wide consultations, I have taken the decision to formally resign from APGA and align with the African Democratic Congress, which provides a clearer vision for good governance and national renewal,” Abaribe said.
The senator also emphasized the need for a strong, principled opposition capable of presenting Nigerians with a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Abaribe’s departure from APGA follows months of strained relations over issues such as internal party democracy, candidate selection processes, and the alleged marginalisation of key stakeholders. He had previously criticised the party’s leadership for unilateral decision-making and a lack of consensus-building.
Sources further revealed that the senator was involved in disputes concerning APGA’s political strategy in Abia State, particularly regarding alliances and the party’s posture towards the ruling party—an approach he reportedly believed undermined APGA’s founding ideals.
A former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Senator Abaribe is regarded as one of APGA’s most prominent national figures. His defection is expected to have significant political implications in Abia South and beyond, especially as political alignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
