Residents and businesses in several communities across Accra are expected to experience significant water supply disruptions on Thursday, December 19, following a planned maintenance shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant.
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) announced that it is undertaking critical maintenance works at the facility, which will require a temporary halt in water production and distribution. According to the company, the shutdown is necessary to ensure the long-term efficiency and reliability of the plant.
Graphic Online reported that the interruption will affect water supply to more than 15 communities in the capital and surrounding areas. Communities likely to be impacted include Accra Central, Dansoman, Mallam, Weija, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kaneshie, Odorkor, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Chorkor, Abeka, Lapaz, Tesano, Kokomlemle, Alajo, Nima, Maamobi, Dzorwulu, Abelemkpe, and adjoining areas.
GWCL has assured the public that adequate resources and logistics have been mobilised to complete the maintenance work efficiently. The company expects the exercise to be completed within a 12-hour window, after which water supply will be gradually restored to affected communities.
In the meantime, residents and businesses have been strongly advised to store sufficient water ahead of the shutdown to minimise inconvenience during the period of disruption.
The announcement comes at a time when consumers are preparing for higher utility costs. Recently, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approved a 15.92% increase in water tariffs for all customer categories, effective January 1, 2026. The adjustment forms part of a major tariff review under the Commission’s Multi-Year Tariff Review Order, which will remain in force from 2026 to 2030 following extensive stakeholder consultations and public hearings.
