Dumsor Alert: Cape Coast to Undergo Planned Power Outage on January 8

Residents of Cape Coast and nearby communities in the Central Region have been informed of a scheduled power outage on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, as part of planned maintenance and upgrade works on the electricity transmission system.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition announced that electricity supply will be interrupted from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. to allow engineers to carry out major improvements at the Cape Coast Substation. The works will involve replacing the existing 33MVA transformer with a higher-capacity 66MVA transformer, a move aimed at strengthening power supply reliability in the area.

In a statement, the Ministry explained that the temporary shutdown is necessary to ensure the safe and efficient execution of the upgrade. The project forms part of the government’s broader policy to expand, modernise, and improve the resilience of the national power transmission infrastructure.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition apologised to residents, businesses, and institutions likely to be affected by the outage and appealed for public cooperation during the maintenance period.

Authorities have assured the public that the upgrade will significantly enhance electricity capacity in Cape Coast and surrounding communities once completed.
