Manchester City Confirm Josko Gvardiol Suffers Broken Leg After Chelsea Draw

Manchester City have suffered a significant blow to their defensive line following the 1–1 Premier League draw with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, January 4. The club confirmed that defender Josko Gvardiol sustained a fracture to his right leg, representing a serious setback for Pep Guardiola’s squad.

The 23-year-old Croatian was forced off the field in the 51st minute following a heavy collision but was able to leave the pitch without a stretcher, assisted by Chelsea captain Reece James. Initial assessments raised concerns, and the club has now confirmed that Gvardiol will undergo surgery later this week, with further evaluations to determine his recovery timeline.

In an official statement, Manchester City said:

“Manchester City FC can confirm that Josko Gvardiol has suffered a tibial fracture to his right leg. The injury was sustained during the second half of Sunday’s 1–1 Premier League draw with Chelsea. The defender will undergo surgery later this week, with further assessment ongoing to determine his recovery timeline.”

Gvardiol took to Instagram to share his reaction, expressing both disappointment and determination:

“This is a tough moment, but it will never define me. I know who I am and where I come from. To the Cityzens, thank you for your incredible support. I love you all, and I’ll fight every day to return stronger, as a City warrior.”

He added a message to fans of his national team:

“My heart beats for Croatia. Always. I will rise again, better than ever – for my club, my teammates, and my people.”

Manchester City Eyeing Defensive Reinforcements

Gvardiol’s long-term absence has prompted speculation over City’s activity in the January transfer market. Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, 25, has emerged as a potential target. However, a mid-season transfer appears unlikely, as Guehi is keen to complete his contract and move on as a free agent in the summer.

Palace have indicated they are unwilling to release their captain midway through the campaign. The club previously rejected a late bid from Liverpool last summer, and manager Oliver Glasner has publicly opposed selling Guehi, despite his own contract expiring at the end of the season.

City are also reportedly monitoring Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo of AFC Bournemouth, whose strong Premier League performances have attracted interest from top European clubs.

Gvardiol’s injury adds urgency to Guardiola’s search for reinforcements as Manchester City navigate a crucial period across domestic and European competitions.
