Manchester United are reportedly considering a shock return for former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, a decision that has sent ripples across the Premier League.
The Red Devils parted company with Amorim on Monday, January 6, just 14 months into his tenure at Old Trafford. The move came after Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Leeds United, a result that compounded mounting pressure on the Portuguese coach. Amorim’s public criticism of the club’s hierarchy after the match is believed to have accelerated his exit.
Amorim departs with a disappointing record, having registered a win rate of just 38.71 per cent. This stands as the poorest return by a Manchester United manager since Frank O’Farrell’s spell in 1971, highlighting the difficulties the club faced during his time in charge.
With the managerial position now vacant, attention has quickly shifted to potential successors. Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola are among the names reportedly being considered as United evaluate long-term options.
In the interim, former midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take charge of the team, beginning with the upcoming league fixture against Burnley. However, reports from The Athletic suggest that the club is also exploring the possibility of appointing Solskjaer in a caretaker role, a move that would mark a dramatic and unexpected return for the Norwegian.
Solskjaer previously served as Manchester United’s interim manager in December 2018 following the sacking of José Mourinho and was subsequently appointed on a permanent basis in 2019. His early spell was marked by an immediate upturn in performances, restoring confidence within the squad and rekindling the bond between the team and its supporters.
During his tenure, United finished second and third in the Premier League and reached the UEFA Europa League final in 2021. Solskjaer’s impact in his initial months was widely praised, earning him the Premier League Manager of the Month award in January 2019.
However, his reign came to an end during the 2021–22 season after a prolonged slump in form, with the team managing just one win in their final seven matches. Despite that downturn, Solskjaer remains a respected figure at Old Trafford, and his familiarity with the club’s culture and structure could make him an attractive short-term option as United seek stability during a turbulent period.
Between December 19, 2018, and November 21, 2021, Solskjaer managed Manchester United in 168 matches, recording 91 wins, 37 draws, and 40 defeats. This equated to an overall win percentage of 54.17 per cent, reflecting a largely successful spell despite its disappointing conclusion.
The sacking of Amorim has continued to generate widespread debate among fans and pundits, with strong reactions across social media and the wider football community as Manchester United prepare to enter yet another new chapter.
