American rap star Cardi B, born Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, has shared candid remarks about why she believes she would struggle to practise Islam, citing the discipline required during Ramadan as a major challenge.
In a video that has since gone viral on social media, the Grammy Award–winning artiste humorously admitted that she does not think she has the endurance to observe the Ramadan fast, which requires abstaining from food and drink from dawn to sunset. According to her, going for long hours without eating is particularly difficult.
Addressing Muslims and non-Muslims who participate in Ramadan fasting, she said jokingly, “To my Muslims out there and non-Muslims doing Ramadan fasting, God knows not to make me a Muslim. If I wake up and I go three hours without eating, my head starts to hurt, and I start hearing voices.”
While her comments were delivered in a lighthearted tone, Cardi B emphasized that she lacks the level of discipline needed to refrain from food and water for extended periods. She explained that hunger significantly affects her mood and physical well-being.
The rapper further disclosed that when she becomes extremely hungry, she prefers to isolate herself—even from her children—and avoids using her phone because of how much her temperament changes. Her remarks were intended to highlight her personal limitations rather than criticize the religious practice.
Despite admitting her struggles with fasting, Cardi B expressed admiration for Muslims who observe Ramadan. She commended their commitment and devotion, noting that abstaining from basic comforts such as food and water for spiritual reasons demonstrates strong faith and dedication to God.
Her statements have since generated mixed reactions online. Many social media users found her honesty amusing and appreciated her candid personality, with one commenter suggesting she would excel as a comedian. Others, however, questioned her views on a religion she does not practise, arguing that such topics should be approached with caution.
At the same time, several supporters defended her, pointing out that she acknowledged and respected the commitment of Muslims who fast, even if she personally feels unable to meet the demands of the practice.
Ramadan is a sacred month in Islam during which adult Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset, engage in prayer, and focus on spiritual reflection and self-discipline. While Cardi B made it clear that she does not see herself undertaking such a commitment, she maintained a tone of respect toward those who do.
The viral clip continues to spark conversation across social media platforms, underscoring how celebrity commentary on religious practices can quickly attract widespread public attention and debate.
