Armah-Kofi Buah Commissions Third Batch of Blue Water Guards

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has commissioned the third batch of the Blue Water Guards, describing the move as a major boost to Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining and environmental destruction.

The commissioning ceremony took place at the Ezinlibo Naval Base in the Jomoro Municipality, where the Minister said the latest intake further strengthens government efforts to protect the nation’s water bodies from the damaging effects of galamsey.

According to Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah, the newly inducted cohort is made up of more than 600 young men and women selected from the Ashanti, Central, and Eastern Regions. He noted that the recruits have successfully completed intensive training and are fully prepared for deployment.

He explained that the Blue Water Guards will work in collaboration with existing security agencies, with a specific mandate to monitor and safeguard rivers and other water bodies.

“Their main responsibility is to support our security services in combating illegal mining activities, particularly through surveillance and protection of our river bodies,” the Minister stated.

Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah emphasized that the initiative forms part of a broader, long-term strategy aimed at preserving Ghana’s natural resources and protecting the environment for future generations.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to intensifying the fight against illegal mining and ensuring the sustainability of the country’s critical ecosystems nationwide.
