Cryptocurrency Trading Officially Legalised in Ghana

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, has announced that cryptocurrency trading is now legal in Ghana following the passage of the Virtual Asset Service Providers Bill, 2025.

Dr. Asiama made the announcement while speaking at the Bank of Ghana’s Nine Lessons, Carols and Thanksgiving Service held in Accra on December 19. He explained that the new law establishes a clear regulatory framework for virtual assets, effectively removing the uncertainty that previously surrounded cryptocurrency activities in the country.

“Effectively, virtual assets trading is now legal and no one is going to be arrested for engaging in cryptocurrency activities. However, we now have a framework to manage the risks involved,” he stated.

He emphasized that the legalization does not amount to a free-for-all. According to him, the law empowers the central bank to license, regulate, and supervise digital asset operators to ensure consumer protection and maintain financial stability.

Dr. Asiama noted that proper regulation would help curb risks such as fraud and money laundering, while also promoting innovation, enhancing financial inclusion, and supporting the growth of Ghana’s fintech ecosystem.

He further explained that the new crypto law, alongside amendments to the Bank of Ghana Act, strengthens oversight and governance structures to prevent a recurrence of the institutional failures experienced during the 2022 financial crisis.

“The progress gives us room to move, but it also calls for responsibility and vigilance,” Dr. Asiama added, assuring the public of the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to maintaining stability as the digital asset space continues to expand.
