Church Allegedly Bars Groomsmen and Female Guest Over Hairstyles and Dress Code in Port Harcourt

Two groomsmen and a female guest have reportedly been denied entry to a wedding ceremony at a church in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, over concerns about their hairstyles and attire.

The incident, which has since sparked widespread discussion on social media, occurred at the Spoken Word Bible Assembly. A video recorded outside the church shows the groomsmen standing with a woman who was also allegedly prevented from entering because her dress was considered too tight.

One of the groomsmen, a content creator identified as Yankohboy, shared the video on TikTok and expressed his frustration over the situation. In text overlaid on the clip, he stated that they had been asked to remain outside the church due to their appearance, questioning what was inappropriate about their look.

According to Yankohboy, the groomsmen had spent approximately ₦185,000 on their suits in preparation for the wedding, only to be turned away because they wore braided hairstyles. He explained that they were part of the groom’s entourage and had arrived at the church expecting to participate in the ceremony.

In the video, the content creator also pointed to the female guest, who was dressed in white, saying she had been denied entry because of her outfit. He questioned the church’s decision, arguing that places of worship should prioritise individuals’ character rather than their outward appearance.

“This is a church, not a club,” he remarked, adding that he believed faith should focus on the heart rather than hairstyles or clothing.

The incident has generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users supporting the church’s right to enforce a dress code, while others criticised the action as discriminatory and unwelcoming.

As of the time of publication, the church involved has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
