Five Killed in Fatal Crash on Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway Ahead of Christmas

Five people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the Cape Coast–Takoradi Highway, heightening concerns about road safety as the Christmas season approaches.

The fatal collision occurred on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at Ayensudo Meyinda and involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a DAF truck. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that all five victims were passengers trapped inside the bus.

According to an official statement from the GNFS, a rescue team from the Komenda Fire Station was swiftly dispatched to the scene at 9:26 a.m. Firefighters worked meticulously to extricate the deceased passengers from the wreckage and collaborated with other emergency agencies to retrieve and transport the bodies.

In addition to the rescue operation, the team secured the accident scene and cleared debris from the roadway to restore traffic flow and ensure public safety. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities.

The GNFS noted that the coordinated emergency response highlights its continued commitment to public safety and effective disaster management.

Rising road accidents in Ghana

The incident adds to Ghana’s growing road safety challenges in 2025. Provisional figures released earlier this year by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) showed that 7,289 road crashes were recorded in the first half of the year alone. These crashes involved 12,354 vehicles and resulted in 8,300 non-fatal injuries, while 1,301 pedestrians were knocked down nationwide.

By October 2025, the total number of reported crashes had risen to 11,935, compared with 11,127 during the same period in 2024, representing a 7.3% increase. The number of vehicles involved in accidents climbed from 18,879 to 20,397, while fatalities rose by more than 300 to 2,429. Injuries also increased from 12,921 to 13,764 over the same period.

The NRSA has attributed the surge in road accidents partly to weak adherence to road safety regulations and poor enforcement.

Recent related incident

In a related development, YEN.com.gh recently reported that the District Chief Executive for Bole, Abdulai Mahamud, was involved in a road accident on December 9, 2025, while travelling to Tamale on official duty. The crash occurred at Galinzegu, near Sankpagla, along the Yapei–Tamale Highway in the Savannah Region. Reports indicated that the DCE was in stable condition following the incident.

As travel volumes increase ahead of the festive season, authorities continue to urge motorists to exercise caution, observe traffic regulations, and prioritise safety on Ghana’s roads.
